Press Release – S-3
Government Seeks Second Extension on S-3
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 22, 2017
Ottawa, ON – The Government of Canada has decided not to move forward with a controversial bill aimed at eliminating gender-based discrimination in registration of status First Nations. Instead, the government will be seeking an extension from the Quebec Superior Court in a bid for more time to incorporate concerns raised by opponents of S-3, An Act to Amend the Indian Act (elimination of sex-based inequities in Indian registration).
We support the government’s decision to seek a further extension in conjunction with the plaintiffs in the Descheneaux case. Additional time would enable the government to explore and research the impacts of potential solutions to remedying outstanding concerns brought forward by witnesses who have appeared in front of the House of Commons and Senate committees that studied the bill.
We look forward to working with the government in a productive and cooperative manner in an effort to address continuing gender-based discrimination in registration.
